Gays Who Thrive
A group for gay identified individuals
This is a support group for gay-identified individuals to chat in a private space and get support from other gay men. Discuss whatever is on your mind in a space dedicated to empowering gay individuals to live their truth. Group discussions may include: dating issues, being gay in a conservative family, living in a conservative area, marriage and intimacy issues, open/poly relationships, coming out, finding gay friends, advocacy, activism, discussing our life history, what pride means to you, the cis-hetero community, and so much more. What will you get out of this program? 1) A renewed understanding of yourself as a gay individual 2) Honest feedback from other members who are not your friends, so are unbiased. 3) Improvement in interpersonal communication and socialization skills 4) Increasing confidence in gay identity 5) Greater sense of community 6) Receiving and getting support from others and working through conflicts 7) Learn how to be vulnerable and express personal issues in a safe space 8) Establish more personal accountability 9) Increase a sense of belongingness 10) Developing trust and building intimacy About the Facilitator: Matthew Matthew identifies as a White/Native Hawaiian, Disabled, Gay, Cis, Male (He/Him/His). He grew up in the Bay Area in sunny California. He also has a physical disability, which made coming out that much more difficult. Matthew struggled with his marginalized identities and at times did not feel included in the "mainstream" gay community. Matthew did his dissertation on the experiences of gay men with physical disabilities, looking at the intersections of both identities as one is coming out. This study revealed that many of the participants had a lot of support around their disability but not gay identity, the more religious the family the harder the coming out process was, and that gay men with disabilities didn't feel accepted in gay spaces that weren't accessible. They felt gay men had impossible expectations for a perfect abled body guy. He hopes to incorporate some of his research and experiences in this group, giving you all the space to discuss what it is REALLY like to be gay. Please email email@example.com if you have any questions. Group session is : Sunday (2 PM) EST All group sessions are in Eastern Standard Time, USA but members can live anywhere in the world.
